APRIL 8, 2013 - Statement regarding the death of William McCune

April 8, 2013
It is with the deepest sense of sorrow that the Nevada Division of Insurance must report the loss of our friend and colleague, Chief Insurance Examiner William “Bill” McCune.

Bill has served as the Division’s Chief Insurance Examiner for more than three years. He relocated to Carson City specifically to undertake this regulatory role, coming from the District of Columbia Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking.

Insurance Commissioner Scott Kipper first met Bill in the early 1990s when they both worked together for the Wyoming Insurance Department, and they remained friends ever since. Since Bill’s arrival in Carson City, there has been significant modernization of Nevada’s fiscal and market conduct oversight of the approximately 2,300 insurers licensed to do business in Nevada.

As Chief Insurance Examiner, Bill was responsible for ensuring the financial solvency of Nevada’s $11.2 billion insurance industry. His passing will be felt throughout the insurance industry as he was nationally recognized and appreciated as a vigilant and innovative regulator. His cooperative and transparent approach to regulation has changed the Division’s regulatory efforts for the better and will endure in spite of this inexplicable tragedy.

“Bill was a kind and gentle man who touched the lives of everyone who met him,” said Insurance Commissioner Kipper. “The impact his personality and intellect made on the Division of Insurance will be felt for years to come. We are truly saddened by this loss.”

Commissioner Kipper assures the consumers and insurers of Nevada who depend on the Division to regulate the industry that its efforts to maintain Bill’s high standards of regulatory oversight will endure.

It is with sincere gratitude that the Division offers its thanks to Carson City Sheriff Furlong, his team of investigators and the community at large.

Until such time as a successor is appointed, Deputy Commissioner Michael Lynch will serve as the point of contact for anyone needing to communicate with our Corporate and Financial Affairs section. He can be contacted at (775) 687-0758 or by email at mlynch@doi.nv.gov.
