FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – September 21, 2023
Carson City, NV
– September 21, 2023 - September is National Preparedness Month, and this
year's theme, "Take Control in 1, 2, 3," focuses on empowering
everyone, especially older adults, to take these three simple proactive steps
to prepare for emergencies and disasters:
1. Assess your
needs. Understand your unique needs, whether it's medication that requires
refrigeration, needing access to mobility or assistive devices, or caring for
your pet. Additionally, make sure to create a detailed home inventory of your
valuable items and store it in a secure location.
2. Make a plan. Once you've got a handle on your needs, it's time to
make a plan. Consider what steps you'd take, where you'd go, and what
essentials to pack in your emergency kit. For peace of mind, also consider
giving your insurance agent or broker a call to review your policy and ensure
you have an adequate amount of coverage in place. Visit Ready.gov/older-adults and Ready.gov/es/adultos-mayores for more helpful resources on how to get
prepared.
3. Engage your support network. Get to know your neighbors because they,
along with your family and friends, can serve as a valuable support system,
offering both emotional and practical assistance before, during, and after a
disaster.
