For consumers unable to secure new coverage via an agent or broker, contact the Western Association of Automobile Insurance Plans ("WAAIP"), which can identify coverage options for qualified individuals. WAAIP connects people having difficulty obtaining auto insurance with an insurer. Contact WAAIP at (800) 227-4659 for assistance.
Premium Refunds
If you attempted to renew your Key Insurance policy starting March 4, 2025, and paid a premium to Key Insurance Company, you should be receiving a refund. Refunds are being processed using the same payment method initially used, with no action required from policyholders.
Avoid DMV Fines
For an insurance lapse, policyholders should complete the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles ("DMV") Smart Form using the following link: DMV Smart Form.
This form should be completed if you have experienced a lapse in coverage due to the nonrenewal or cancellation of your Key Insurance policy. Once submitted, the DMV will verify records, assess the time frame of any coverage gap, and determine whether a fine is applicable.

by the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (“DMV”).
The DMV is aware of the situation involving
Key Insurance and is evaluating each lapse of coverage. To notify DMV that you have been affected by

Form using the following link: DMV
Smart Form. Once submitted, the DMV will verify records, assess

Why was my Key Insurance policy cancelled?
On March 3, 2025, Key Insurance was placed into receivership by a court in its domiciliary state of Kansas, and Key Insurance was no longer allowed to sell or renew insurance policies.
On March 31, 2025, the court ordered that Key Insurance be liquidated effective April 1, 2025, requiring Key Insurance to cancel all remaining policies.
Will the nonrenewal or cancellation affect my ability to find new coverage?
No, it should not. However, if you experience an issue inform your broker or agent that the cancellation or nonrenewal is not your fault but is due to Key Insurance Company's insolvency.
What if I am having trouble getting new auto insurance?
The Division encourages you to work with trusted local agents or brokers to obtain new coverage. If you are unable to obtain coverage, you can contact the Western Association of Automobile Insurance Plan (“WAAIP”), which is available to identify coverage options for qualified individuals. WAAIP is a processing center where people who have trouble buying automobile insurance are put in touch with an insurance company that will insure them. Contact the Western Association of Automobile Insurance Plan at (800) 227-4659 for assistance.

I paid a premium to Key Insurance after March 3, 2025.
Should I expect a refund?
If you attempted to renew your insurance policy with an effective date on or after March 4, 2025, and paid a premium to Key Insurance, you should receive a refund. Refunds are being processed using the same payment method initially used, with no action required from policyholders.
What does “receivership” mean?
“Receivership” is a court process, like bankruptcy, for insurance companies that do not have enough money to pay their debts. The court appoints a “receiver” to manage operations at the insurance company to determine the financial status of the company and to determine how best to protect policyholders and the public. Depending on the circumstances, the company may be rehabilitated (operations adjusted), liquidated (company closed), or returned to private management (no change).
Why was Key Insurance placed in receivership?
The Kansas Insurance Commissioner determined that Key Insurance was insolvent—Key Insurance did not have enough money to cover its debts. As a result, liquidation became necessary to ensure the money Key Insurance has goes to policyholder claims before anyone else.
What if I have a claim?
See What is the difference between a claim and a proof of claim? below.
Claims before policy cancellation. Claims for events that occurred while the insurance policy was in effect will be evaluated by the Nevada Insurance Guaranty Association according to Nevada law. The Association will decide whether the claim will be paid.
Claims after policy cancellation. If a claim occurs after the policy was cancelled and before you obtain new coverage, the claim will not be covered.
What is the Nevada Insurance Guaranty Association?
The Nevada Insurance Guaranty Association may cover the claims up to a certain limit set by Nevada law of Nevada policyholders whose auto insurance company goes into receivership. If a company becomes insolvent, claims are sent to the Association for determination on whether the claim will be paid and how much of the claim will be paid. This applies to those who had a claim prior to the nonrenewal or cancellation of their policies.
Do I need to file a proof of claim form in the receivership?
If you are a policyholder whose claim was rejected by the Nevada Insurance Guaranty Association, you may have to file a proof of claim. Contact the Special Deputy Receiver. All proofs of claim must be filed by April 1, 2026.
If you believe Key Insurance owes you money (unrelated to auto insurance coverage) and wish to pursue it, you must file a proof of claim by April 1, 2026, with the Special Deputy Receiver. Your proof of claim will then be considered based on the priority classes set forth in Kansas law.
What is the difference between a claim and a proof of claim?
A "claim" against insurance coverage is not the same thing as a "proof of claim".
A claim is when a policyholder or other person involved in an incident seek coverage against the insurance policy.
For example, if you were involved in an accident, you or the other person in the accident file a claim under the insurance policy.
A proof of claim is a form approved by a court that must be filed by any person who is or may be owed money by an insurance company for matters not covered by an insurance policy. For example,
If you were hired by the insurance company to provide a service to the company (clean offices, tech support, etc.), you would need to file a proof of claim for moneys you claim are owed.
If you have a court-ordered judgment against the insurance company, you may need to file a proof of claim.
Contact the Special Deputy Receiver for instruction.
How can I stay informed about the receivership?
The Key Insurance website will be updated with the latest information about the receivership. Please visit https://keyinsco.com/
For Claimants
I was in an accident with a Key Insurance policyholder. What happens to my claim?
If you have insurance - You are encouraged to reach out to your insurance company to submit a claim, and Key Insurance will transfer your claim against Key Insurance to the Nevada Insurance Guaranty Association. The Association will then contact you.
If you do not have insurance - You must wait until Key Insurance transfers your claim to the Nevada Insurance Guaranty Association. The Association will then contact you.
For Producers (Agents & Brokers)
Read the information above for policyholders and claimants to best help your clients understand what is happening. All producers authorized by Key Insurance have been notified by the Special Deputy Receiver that Key Insurance policies have been nonrenewed or are being cancelled. Your client may have experienced a lapse in coverage. Work with your clients immediately to ensure they have obtained new auto insurance coverage.
Will I be paid for outstanding commissions?
Any producer who believes commissions are owed must file a proof of claim with the Special Deputy Receiver.
For Lawsuits
I have a judgment against Key Insurance. What will happen to it?
All judgments that have not been satisfied must file a proof of claim by April 1, 2026, with the Special Deputy Receiver. Your proof of claim will then be considered based on the priority classes set forth in Kansas law.
What if I am suing or wanting to sue Key Insurance?
The Kansas Court ordered an injunction and stay of all actions against Key Insurance across the country. This means that all suits against Key Insurance must stop and as allowed by law, the existing suits are transferred to the Kansas Court.
